The school building at 745 Rosalia Street in Atlanta, Georgia was originally built in the 1920's to relieve increasing enrollment for Girls' High School of Atlanta. This building opened in January 1925 with 104 rooms including science halls, laboratories, a business department, sewing rooms, a library, an art department, music room, and the outdoor classrooms on the third level. Twenty classrooms and individual offices for the 39 teachers were also included. Locker alcoves and two large study halls were located across the hall from the library. A school bank, complete with cages, was part of the business department. The cafeteria and boiler house were constructed later in 1937.
In 1947, Atlanta high schools became co-educational. Girls' High was renamed Roosevelt High School for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The gymnasium was added in 1950, and a new cafeteria and kitchen were added in 1953. The last major alteration to the building came in 1966, when the science labs and classrooms were renovated. The school closed in 1985 and Roosevelt was combined with Hoke Smith Technical School.
A new school building was established on the old football field located on Glenwood Avenue just below the old school building. The old school remains and our former classrooms have been renovated into apartments. The cafeteria is gone and an outdoor pool is in the same spot. Our beloved breezeway was torn down, and the boys' gym no longer has bleachers but lofts!
